The task of a civil engineer is to find a balance between the natural environment and the built environment. Civil Engineers construct manmade structures that make the life of human beings comfortable and easier. But at the same time, civil engineers try their level best not to hamper the natural ecology of the world. They also try their best to ensure the economic feasibility of the various projects they undertake.
The department of Civil Engineering at GIET University has been at the forefront in areas such as theoretical and applied mechanics, earthquake engineering, large scale testing and computation, water engineering and so on. Our professionally trained faculty have been guiding the students to carry out important research work in the field. The important areas where research has been undertaken are:
Structural engineering
Structural engineering is a field within civil engineering. It focuses on the framework of structures like bridges, buildings etc. It focuses on designing structures in such a manner that they can withstand the stresses and pressures of their environment and can remain safe.
The major research areas under Structural Engineering that the department of Civil Engineering at GIET University focus on are structural dynamics, wind-induced vibration and control, seismic damage assessment, system identification and structural health monitoring and so on.
Urban Studies/Planning
Urban Studies or Urban Planning is focused on the development and design of land use and the built environment. Urban Planners are concerned with communication, transportation, distribution, and their accessibility to the local population.
The department of Civil Engineering has focused on the urban landscape of the country. Research has been carried on topics like urban morphology, urban heat island effect, developing an early earthquake warning system and so on.
Construction, Energy and Sustainable Infrastructure Research
This area is a mixture of cutting-edge research and teaching. Our researchers have been working on topics like construction, energy, sustainable infrastructure, etc. to address the challenges faced by our infrastructure systems.
Seismic Hazard Assessment
Seismic Hazard Assessment is an effort by scientists to quantify seismic hazard and their associated uncertainty. The scientists associated with this field try to provide estimates for seismic risk assessment and other applications.
The goal of researchers at the Department of Civil Engineering is to enhance the seismic resiliency of communities through improved engineering and management tools.
Transportation Safety
Transportation Engineering is a subfield of Civil Engineering. Transportation engineer’s responsibility is to plan, design, build, operate and maintain systems of transport in such a manner that they are safe, efficient and convenient for the general public.
Our researchers have been working tirelessly to improve road safety to reduce the number of accidents and subsequent deaths and injuries.
All our faculty members and students are associated with at least one of the aforementioned research areas. The department has been trying its best to prepare students who can meet the requirements of this evolving and expanding branch of engineering.
