Dongria Kondh and Lanjia Saura Artisans Honoured for Preserving Traditional Crafts Gunupur, April 25:

World Intellectual Property Day was celebrated today at GIET University under the aegis of the university’s Intellectual Property Rights Cell.

Dr. Gupteswar Majhi, Scientist at C-DOT, attended the programme as the chief guest and spoke on the role of intellectual property rights in the commercialization of products and innovations.

Guest of honour Dr. Anita Sabat, Odisha GI Consultant, highlighted how regional artisans can secure Geographical Indication (GI) tags for their products and stressed the importance of protecting indigenous crafts and knowledge systems.

Asha Hole, Founder and CEO of Geniobrain IP Solutions, discussed the process of intellectual property registration and explained its significance in safeguarding innovation and creativity.

Vice-Chancellor of GIET University, Prof. Dr. A.V.N.L. Sharma, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of World Intellectual Property Day and the need to promote awareness regarding intellectual property rights. Dr. K. Murali Gopal, Deputy Dean of the Department of Computer Science, also shared insights on intellectual property grants and related opportunities.

Jagabandhu Meher, Special Officer of DKDA, Chatikana, Rayagada district, participated in the event and provided valuable information about the traditional craftsmanship of the Dongria Kondh community.

Dr. Raghavendra Kumar, a member of the university’s Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Deeptikanta Acharya presented a detailed report on the activities undertaken by the centre. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Shashank Shekhar Panda.The programme was organised under the direct supervision of Dr. N.V.J. Rao, Registrar of GIET University and Chairperson of the Intellectual Property Centre. Faculty member Furti Fiza conducted the stage proceedings, while Assistant Professor Amlan Asutosh coordinated the event.

A major highlight of the event was the participation of artisans from the Dongria Kondh community of Chatikana, Rayagada, who showcased handcrafted shawls made by them. Members of the Lanjia Saura community from the Putasing region also displayed their traditional Idital paintings.

The programme witnessed the participation of local entrepreneurs, faculty members, and students of GIET University.
