Industrial Visit Report for Mechanical Engineering Students

Date of Visit: 3rd and 4th January, 2025
Participants: 28 number of students from 2nd year and 3rd year with 2 faculty members, Dr. Sasank Shekhar Panda and Mr. Sukant Kumar Nayak
Objective: The primary aim of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to industrial operations, enhance their technical understanding, and familiarize them with real-world engineering practices.

  1. Skill Development Institute (SDI), Bhubaneswar

Overview:
Skill Development Institute (SDI), Bhubaneswar, is a state-of-the-art training center established to empower young professionals with hands-on technical skills. The institute focuses on developing industry-relevant competencies, particularly for engineering students and technicians.

Activities and Learning Outcomes:

  • Students were introduced to various training modules such as CNC machining, welding, industrial automation, and robotics.
  • A detailed demonstration of CNC machines highlighted the importance of precision and automation in modern manufacturing.
  • Faculty at SDI explained their skill development programs designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industrial requirements.
  • Students gained insights into advanced software like AutoCAD and SolidWorks, used in design and drafting.
  • We have also experienced the Virtual Reality concept.

  1. Parle Biscuit Industry

Parle Biscuit Industry is a renowned name in the FMCG sector, known for producing high-quality biscuits and confectioneries. The factory in Bhubaneswar, Odisha provided students with a glimpse into large-scale food manufacturing processes.

Activities and Learning Outcomes:

  • The students observed the entire production cycle, including raw material handling, mixing, baking, cooling, and packaging.
  • Automation in production was demonstrated, showing how conveyors, PLC systems, and robotic arms are used to streamline operations.
  • Quality control practices were highlighted, showcasing how products are tested at various stages to ensure consistency and safety.
  • Students interacted with engineers who shared insights into the maintenance and operation of industrial machinery.

  1. Central Tool Room and Training Centre (CTTC), Bhubaneswar

Overview:
CTTC Bhubaneswar is a premier institute focused on advanced manufacturing and tool design. It serves as a hub for innovation and provides specialized training in machining, CAD/CAM, and mold design.

Activities and Learning Outcomes:

  • Students observed the operation of high-precision machines like CNC lathes, milling machines, and EDM (Electrical Discharge Machines).
  • A session on mold design and manufacturing provided insights into the tooling industry’s role in mass production.
  • Exposure to reverse engineering techniques, 3D printing, and additive manufacturing gave students a view of cutting-edge technologies.
  • The visit concluded with a demonstration of quality control techniques, including coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
