National Seminar On LIVELIHOOD IMPROVEMENT OF TRIBALS THROUGH SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Historically, tribal communities were characterized by a lifestyle distinct from agrarian communities. They subsisted on various activities relating to combinations of shifting cultivation, hunting, and gathering of forest products. The tribal communities as the most underprivileged, are severely impacted by poverty and its manifestations, such as low levels of literacy and healthcare, hunger, and malnutrition. Development programs are being undertaken for the improvement of tribal communities in the field of health, education, agriculture, and skill upgradation supplemented with improved rural connectivity. The focus is on empowering and enabling them to enhance food security, increase economic status and improve their overall quality of life. The major thrust areas of their economic prosperity relate to natural resources management, improved watershed management, environmentally sustainable agricultural practices, and off-farm enterprise development. The livelihood approach needs to be people centric, holistic, dynamic and built on strength and assets with sustainability. Keeping all these in view, the National Seminar has been proposed on “Livelihood Improvement of Tribals through Sustainable Agriculture” with the following theme areas:
