Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Overview

Doctor of Philosophy or a Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering is a doctorate level course that involves an in-depth study of various aspects of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Candidates pursuing a doctoral degree are introduced to the workings of electricity, electromagnetism and electronics. The degree is generally completed in three years but sometimes can extend up to five years. A doctorate develops advanced research skills in candidates that will prepare them for a career in academics or research work where critical and analytical skills are required.

Eligibility:

For admission into Ph.D., candidates need to have an M.Tech./ME in Electrical, Electronics, Communications, Computer Science, Instrumentation, Control Engineering or an equivalent degree. The minimum percentage required is 55 per cent or a CGPA score of 5.5 on a ten-point scale. Candidates who have cleared CSIR/UGC/JRF or GATE is an added advantage. They can also sit directly for the viva.

The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at GIET University has well-experienced faculty members to guide candidates to pursue research in an area of their choice. The university also has well-equipped infrastructure for advanced research.

The research areas in Electrical and Electronics Engineering where candidates carry out their research include:

Power Systems

Power systems analysis, dynamics and computerized control, voltage stability, dynamic security assessment and emergency control, intelligent monitoring and preventive control, computer-aided protection, energy conservation

Power Electronics

Digital control of industrial drives, self commissioning of induction motor drives, multilevel inverters for AC drives; development, testing and control of high-power converters, permanent magnet machines.

High Voltage Engineering

Thermal problems in electrical insulation, tracking and erosion, diagnostic testing and condition monitoring of power equipment, electromagnetic field theory, application of high voltage engineering to air pollution control, over-voltage phenomena in power apparatus and systems.

Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Statistical techniques in computer vision, motion analysis and object tracking, distributed camera networks, video analytics, medical image processing, biomedical imaging, document image analysis and recognition, speech signal processing, communication protocols.

Successful completion of Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering opens up a lot of careers for candidates. They can work as Power Electronics Engineer, Power Manager, Product Development Engineer, Systems Engineer and so on. Academics and research are other lucrative areas, doctorate holders can try their luck in.
