GANDHI INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

(R & D unit recognized by DSIR, under Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India)

Institutional framework for R&D

The research programmes are promoted through R &D Department headed by a Professor designated as Dean (R & D). Who coordinates research programmes of the Group with the help of in-house committee, known as Research Monitoring Committee (RMC). All the Heads of the Departments and Senior Professors are the members of the Committee. The Committee meets once a month where research proposals are scrutinized and recommended for submission to different funding agencies.

The apex body is the Research Council (RC).  The members of the Council are chosen on an all-India basis.  The members are Professors from IITs, NITs, universities, scientists from national & regional laboratories and practicing engineers from industries.  The RC members meet once a year where selected research work based on innovative ideas is presented before the RC members. Depending on the approval of the RC (in the form of minutes approved by the Chairman of RC), corrective measures are taken. Apart from this the institute  also have research monitoring committee and research core committee to monitor and suggest for the progress of research activities.

Every Department has student body which organizes exhibitions where different working models are shown. The Departments select a few and report to the Dean (R&D). A few selected working models are then chosen for presentation before the RC members during the annual meeting. The faculty members also present their research work in the same poster session. Awards are given with certificates of merit as per the judgment given by a panel of experts, constituted from among the RC members, attending the meeting. Some selected research work of the students are permitted for presentation along with the faculty members in the presentation forum during the RC meeting. Faculty members are awarded with prizes and merit certificates with the recommendation of RC members.

An industry-institute interactive programme was organized by R&D Centre of the Institute. Where industrialists from neighbouring states participated. Industries such as Aastropure Ahmedabad J. K. Paper Mills Rayagada, Vedanta, Nalco Bhubaneswar, Foundries from Jamshedpur, etc were present in the campus for different industrial problems. In the recent past (2007-08), GIET has transferred a Technology for producing spheroidal graphite iron from Mini Blast furnace hot metal of Kalinga Iron Works Barbil jointly with IIT Kharagpur and CET, Bhubaneswar. As a result of these efforts, a few industries  have signed MoUs with GIET.
