The department of Chemical Engineering, conducts 4 years degree course in Engineering under affiliation to Berhampur University (upto 2006) and Biju Patnaik University of Technology (B.Tech programme w.e.f. 2003). The course is designed by the University, and aimed at making the students well versed with the recent trends as well as the basics of Chemical Engineering.
The Department’s strength lies in a highly experienced and celebrated team of professors drawn from premier technological institutions of the country. Various laboratories with state of the art machineries, sophisticated equipments and apparatus elevate the image of the department and institution.
The department has the following laboratories : Mechanical Operation Lab, Mass Transfer lab,Heat Transfer lab, Chemical Reaction Engineering Lab, Chemical Technology Lab. Besides, the students of chemical engineering take training in Fluid Mechanics laboratories (under Mechanical Engineering department). The students are also imparted training in Process Control (in E & I Dept.)
The department also provides simulation modeling software so as to give extra practical exposure to the students.
The students as part of their curriculum are encouraged to take up projects in the promising areas V
the following areas.
(i). Reaction Engineering
(ii). Mechanical Operations
(iii). Heat Transfer
(iv). Simulation and Modelling
(v). Computer Aided Process Design
(vi). R & D related works related to small scale industries.
The department imparts training for managerial skill development by conducting regular PD (personality development) classes, Group Discussions and Seminars. Mock Interviews and technical tests are conducted for the senior students.
The department promote industry-institute interaction in the state of Orissa. It has already taken up R&D activities such as reclamation of used engine oil, recovery of lead based chemical from low grade lead ore. It has also successfully fabricated a number of equipments / models such as response of tank systems (2001) shell & tube heat exchanger (2003) and liquid-liquid extraction column (2003). The department has taken initiatives to invite experts from reputed industries of the paper technology, alumina and aluminium technology, biotechnology, sponge iron making etc. for the students.
